Artist's Comments:
These big babies are weaned when mom abruptly returns to the sea to replenish her reserves. The abandoned pups must further mature before venturing into the sea and find companionship together in groups called “weaner pods.” This drawing was from photos of one especially adorable weaner I encountered while doing intertidal research on San Nicolas Island.
